So it's Tuesday.

To quote a random comment read on the CFCN.ca website relating to an experiment in France/Switzerland to create a mini Big Bang and see what comes out of it, there is quite a bit of fear mongering that "playing God" is not cool, and this will kill us all, a couple of smart people trying to explain to everyone else why it is OK to try this and then Sarah: "Hey...think of it this way: If it does destroy the world, at least we won't have an election!"

The new job is half great, except I have yet to spend a day at my second campus, and starting Thursday I will get my first shot.  Everyone at the High School is great, it is such a friendly and warm place to work and it feels like I am doing the job a million times better than the last person, everyone keeps telling me they are so happy I am there.  The kids are even great, it has a feel of cadet camp at times but you know, I kinda like that.  Connecting with the kids in my own not directly responsible for them way, but still being part of the process.

Volleyball tryouts are in full swing and as the coach of the junior varsity boys, I am a little apprehensive about doing a quality job.  This is no longer the rec play of cadets where sportsmanship is the big key and winning is awesome, this is actually highly competitive highly dedicated kids.  I like the competitive edge but want to keep the play light and fun for all, its no fun if its not fun, know what I mean?

I called Popular Science today to straighten up some account issues for work, and for the first time ever in my life, I found a hold music mate for the Calgary Health Region.  They were playing the exact same song that I have come to know and love and secretly play my air piano along as it gently passes the time I spend waiting.

I have begun to practice drinking and sporting.  Deciding to run a triathlon after a day of drinking, going for a run to retrieve my car after a night of drinking, it seems the more I drink the more sporty I am inclined to be.  It may seem like a downhill slope but I will take the chance.

This is not me caving to the competition, it is me actually feeling inspired to post, if for no other reason than to share the quote of our dear friend Sarah, but hey a post is always good and always appreciated.

Pax.

Of Booze, Time and Religion

I had an adventure today.  Of the awkward kind.  The kind where you go somewhere and run into someone you talked to quite a bit back in the day but haven't seen in years.  The kind where you talk about what little there could still be in common with the two of you.  The kind where you run out of stuff to talk about.  The kind where there is still lots of time left that could have been filled with talking.

I went recycling today.  The bottle box was getting full and I had a bunch at work so on my supper break I ran another errand and went to the bottle depot.  Oddly enough, I chose one that we had used as the Student Association at St Mary's College for whatever reason, they had a low service charge or maybe because they sorted.  As I am there with my, I am sure 4 dollars of bottles and cans, this woman who I had checked out and seemed a little emo for my taste comes over and asks if she knows me.  I look again and say she does look familiar and we both agree that we knew each other at StMC back in the day.  She dated a good friend of mine and we all hung out a lot.  We exchanged names again and got to conversing, covered what we had done since StMC, current careers, living situation.  She is now a nurse at the Rockyview, works straight nights (explains the palor) and lives in Evanston which is so far north I have barely heard of it.  She bought in while house prices were still relatively low and is selling it as her and her boyfriend have broken up.  Then we run out of things to talk about, while we both still have full bins of bottles to be counted.  She excuses herself to go to the washroom and I stand.  We make eye contact one last time, she is over with her presumed boyfriend at the cash register and then she is gone.  RANDOM!

While standing there waiting for my count to start another lady is called up, she is waiting, they clear the bin in front of her for her to put her stuff.  After about 5 minutes waiting she decides she has had enough standing around and says I can have her cart of bottles including 4 cases of empty wine bottles and she walks out.  11 bucks and 5 minutes later I walk out of there a little happier than just having a cleaner basement and locker and drawer at work.

Had a little Jewish boy at work as his father if he could get a book about Jesus.  I think he thought he was pushing the limits because he kept asking and his dad said sure.  He then asked his dad if it was really ok because his dad had told him he did not want him learning other Religions.  Twas humorous, on a very, very slow Thursday night.

Off to the Peg for the weekend for the first more than 3 minute trip to Manitoba.  I expect to be disappointed.

R E S P E C T

So I was thinking as I drove along today about people and addressing people, and how it is weird to address certain people by their first name.  Usually it is those people you are not familiar with or those that either have or don't have your respect that you use Mr, Ms, etc.  I got thinking back to high school and how I used to refer to almost all teachers with few exceptions by their first name.  Now I would never call them that in person, but I also would not go out of my way to talk to most of them and would never have to address them regardless.  I remember going to work at the Library and having the hardest time calling people by their first names, it just felt plain weird to be in a peer group that spanned so many generations.  Now a days, it's much easier to just toss around a first name, but do you ever still find yourself with a few people who you have come to respect for whatever reason, it is just odd some times.

The Portland Lumberjacks beat the Calgary Roughnecks tonight in the western final of the NLL playoffs, which means Calgary has no sports worth watching until September when exhibition hockey starts.

On the dream front, I had a dream where the bank called me about a 5000 dollar check I wrote to my parents because they needed me to authorize the deposit of it, and I made fun of them for being stupid and not seeing it clearly said 500 which was under their authorization threshold of 2000.

Went Sim flying today in a 170 degree wraparound stationary simulator at Mount Royal College, did not crash, did a barrel roll, made 6 landings off of 2 takeoffs, not a bad day.  The nice thing about the sim is that no matter who comes out of that room, the smile on their face is huge and there is no denying that is was a damn cool thing to do.  I hope that this type of thing spreads across Canada as the PILAT program steps into gear.

To all the mothers who read this, happy mothers day.

I think they spotted me.  I normally keep my front blinds open so that I can get the most of the natural light coming into my living room.  Yesterday I closed them so I could have a nap and avoid distractions going through my field of vision as I tried to rest.  Well the blinds are still closed but I think the mormons are about and may have seen a shadow cross them.  As I peered through the peep hole to see if anyone good was roaming the complex one of them paused as if to say lets visit his house.  I decided now was a better time than any to occupy myself with blogging.

Is it just me or is journalism getting a little rough around the edges.  Didn't there used to be pride in the product one was putting out?  After watching way to much election night coverage, it seemed almost an amature production of the news.  There was confusion on the hosts part as to what was happening next, wrong graphics silenced the hosts on multiple occasions and all in all it was as if they were trying to be the first to call each point and could care less about the accuracy of it all.  21 minutes in to claim a conservative majority?  Based on single polls reporting in around the province?  Seriously.  I know they have the formulas that help them determine this but is that all the viewers want is the best guesses of a broadcaster.  The Wild Rose Alliance and an independant all had seats won at some point yesterday but when the votes were counted, it showed the opposite.  Should they not strive to get it right the first time?

Oh well, I voted therefore I may bitch.  If parties actually put a little more into their provincial aspirations saying how they would do what they want to do with some concrete facts, maybe that would inspire the people to go out and vote.  To have all parties seeming to want to be in power and misguide us with their own guessing does not promote confidence in them.  Alberta did seem ready for a change, but 40 percent of us decided that its better to have idiots you know blindly screwing around then the idiots you don't.

Of note, the Separation Party of Alberta garnered 120 votes in Rocky Mountain House.  Looks like we may have the start of a breakaway republic up there.  Also it seems we feel very strongly about candidates being close to home and representing their constituants, they elected a U of Windsor law student in Calgary Montrose.

They rang.  I ignored them.  Could be the car in the numbered parking stall is a bit of a giveaway.

This wasn't supposed to be an election rant.  So on the dream front I had a dream that was a follow up to another dream I had.  Its like a freeking TV show.

What ever happened to innocent laughter, at the NFB animated film festival, the last film was about a friendship between two people with Down Syndrome, and the narrator at one point broke into innocent laughter.  At what point do we as a people become so jaded that our laughter becomes a mark of who we are or want to be.  We all still have bits of spontaneous laughter and we recognize them in feeling great and elated when its over, but where did it stop and why?  Is it the canned laughter we expose ourselves to in the media that we try to parrot only to find it is unsatisfying?  Is it the judging of us by our peers that pushes us into trying to maintain the "norm" and therefore we pattern ourselves on those we wish to be?  I wonder if there is a noticeable turning point with after effects that you can see when observing a child changing from that carefree point to whatever it is that haunts us, has us seeking things elsewhere for the rest of our lives.  Something like 400 times a day versus a dozen.  Thats the ratio of laughter in young children versus adults.  Why I wonder.

$500 - Wedding Dress - Never Used

I am feeling quite super right now, to the point where I might order take out chinese to celebrate.  I have conquered that ruiner of floors, that E4 error loving, evil dishwasher.  All it took was some tampering with the floater bobbamagiggy sensor.  Of course there is a perfectly appropriate name for it, but I don't know and don't really care.  In an attempt to drain the dish it resides in, I ended up bending the arm enough so that it no longer triggers the sensor at that low point, resulting in one dishwasher that now works.

After tearing up the floor, I have now relaid it and only need to put the baseboards back on.  I have restored the original hot air vent that was in the kitchen but was mysteriously removed (I think someone may have stepped into it to many times) and the floor looks decent.  Long term plan will be a total relay of the floor in the house, but that is years away.

You would think that someone would have created some sort of basin for a dishwasher to sit in so that flood water would not spill under the floor laid down, or seep into the subfloor or go right through to the basement.  Same thing for fridges and main or upper floor washing machines.  Something to capture the water and drain it into a safe place.  You know the companies building the machines do the best with the cheapest and that they will fail, why not build in that little safeguard to protect peoples assets.  New homes should automatically have that put in, it should be a standard feature.  It would be the under appreciated moneysaver to people all over the industrialized world.  You look how they have made reinforced hoses for washers to prevent them from splitting and flooding the house, why not take this step as well.

So you may be wondering about the title, I thought it was funny when browsing the ads on Facebook, there was this dress, only tried on twice, but never used.  In the ad she put no bad karma, but how could a dress that was purchased for a wedding that never happened not have a bit of bad karma hanging around it?  Think what you may, perhaps the dress was not meant to be worn by her but still rather funny.

I also saw an ad for a free yorkie.  She came with a 1 year health guarantee.  Knowing how big corporations build their items in a way so that they will warranty them for the most time they feel they can safely get away with before screwing you, is there an implant in this dog that is set to go off after the 1 year mark?  This ad made me think I may want a pet, but with the amount of time I am gone it would be cruel to keep one.  Then I remembered I should water the plant.  Until I can remember to water the plant on a regular basis, no things that run around for me.

Lots of other thoughts floating around, but not feeling like putting them to virtual paper, so adieu.  I am off in the search for chinois.

Happy New Year BTW.

Oh and to water the plant.
